Colombo :

Colombo is the capital of Sri Lanka. We just went through the city to reach the airport but we didn’t visit it. That is why we can’t give you our opinion on Colombo.

Tips about Colombo

At your arrival at the airport, there are some ATM without any fees. So, you don’t need to get Sri Lankan rupees before to arrive in the country.

At the end of your trip, don’t forget to exchange all your Sri Lankan rupees, in an exchange office or at the airport. Because it is really difficult to exchange this money in another country, and the rate are better in Sri Lanka.

Negombo :

Negombo is a city by the sea and near to the airport (only 20 min). It is really convenient when you arrive or leave Sri Lanka. We didn’t stroll a lot around the city but what we saw seems nice.

It is the nearest city from the airport so it’s very convenient when you arrive in Sri Lanka.

Moreover, lots of guesthouses in Negombo or the owner of Pick’n Mix restaurant can book for you the tuk-tuk for free to go and to come back at your guesthouse.

Anuradhapura :

Anuradhapura is part of the Sri Lanka’s cultural Triangle. The town is known for its sacred city and it is animated by its market. It was raining cats and dogs but we fully enjoyed it.

In the sacred city, there are some free temples, for the rest you have to pay 25$. You can try to avoid the check points by taking the side roads or pass without being seen, but the guards are quite careful. Another way is to go with a tuk-tuk. As it is free for local people, some of the tuk-tuk drivers propose a tour for half the price, but we didn’t take the risk.

Mihnitale :

Mihnitale is a small town on the way between Anuradhapura and Dambulla. We advise you to make a stop, at least for few hours, to discover the splendid temples at the top of the hill. They offer a wonderful view on the surroundings.

Sigyria :

Sigyria is a small village surrounded by jungle. It consist of an empty main road and some side roads full of guesthouses. We loved this nature break into the jungle, it was very peaceful and relaxing.

For small budgets, you can climb at the top of Pidurangula Rock for 500 rupees/person instead of the Lion’s Rock which cost 25 $/person. The view is just breathtaking

Dambulla :

From Sigyria, we just spent an afternoon to visit the city and its temple carved into the rock. Otherwise, Dambulla has been a transit city for us. There is a lot of traffic jam, many buses for the others cities start from there.

Polonnaruwa :

Polonnaruwa is part of the Sri Lanka’s cultural Triangle. Its sacred city is huge, impressive and well-kept. Exploring it by bicycle was interesting and exciting. Beside this, we didn’t find so much to do.

You should rent a bike to visit all the park, it’s so nice. The distances are too important to do it by walk. Also, we advise you to wear flip-flop, it is more practical because you will have to take off your shoes at each temple’s entrance.

Kandy is part of the Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle. Kandy is known for its Tooth‘s temple. The city was quieter and smaller than we were expecting. We are keeping a great feeling about it. It is also the starting point to the Sri Lanka’s mountains.

Ella is a touristic place in the Sri Lanka’s mountains. The city has been developed for the tourism, there are lot of bars, restaurants and hotels. So, the city centre is losing a bit of its charm but the surroundings are still beautiful with nice walks to do!

Udawalawe is attractive and known for its national park. You might be able to observe animals in their natural habitat, like elephants, peacocks, insects, birds and leopards if you are very lucky. Galle is a city nearby the sea, known for its Fort. The new city is nice but not so attractive, whereas the fortified city is really charming. There are also some beautiful beaches around, as the Udawatuna beach which is not far from Galle.
