Hungary
While waiting to be able to travel again with our backpacks for a very long term, we wanted to do a little road trip in a European country. Why Hungary? We really don't know, it all started with a 3-day weekend that turned into a month of discovery. Anyway, here we go in this country to make us forget the gloom of November. In this article we will make you discover our favorites places of this trip in Hungary. We will also share with you our good addresses, our advice, our itinerary and our budget.
We enjoyed to discover this European country of which we didn't know much. Of course, we've all heard of the beautiful city of Budapest but apart from that it was the unknown for us! We discovered the Hungarian people and their customs, crossed a country whose very diverse architecture transcribes its history. And of course, greedy as we are, we tasted Hungarian gastronomy!
Enough talking, what are our favorite places in Hungary? What are the places that we loved to discover?
1. Budapest
As you can imagine, the city of Budapest is a must on a trip to Hungary. It is a magnificent city, with impressive architecture. The town is cut in two by the Danube. It is a city of all desires! You can simply stroll and observe the life of Budapest residents, taste some specialties, learn about the history of Hungary through the architecture of the city and its museums, or even party until the end of the night.
2. Sopron
Our second favorite place in Hungary is the small village of Sopron in the northwest of the country, close to the Austrian border. It is a medieval village, surrounded by ramparts. The village is well preserved which makes the visit very pleasant. We walk in the small cobbled streets, there is a museum on the history of the region which is very interesting. You also have a very beautiful view of the city from the top of the Tower of Fire.
3. Hollókö
Hollókö, north of Budapest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a veritable open-air museum. The village made up of a street is really atypical with its traditional houses of the Palócs ethnic group. You can discover local crafts and also taste the wines of the region. In addition to the visit of the village there is a very nice little hike to do which takes you to the fort and through the forest.
4. The Hungarian steppes
On our way to the vineyard region we made a stop in the Hungarian steppes of the Hortobágyi nature reserve. There are several possible hikes or bike tours. Be careful, depending on the season you do not necessarily have access to all the paths. We were able to do a very nice hike in the middle of the steppes to observe the birds. A moment of connection to nature guaranteed.
5. The Balaton lake
The Balaton lake, nicknamed "the Hungarian Sea", is the largest lake in Central Europe. It is a very popular place for Hungarians in summer. People come here to enjoy its beaches, water sports and its surroundings. There are very beautiful walks to do in the volcanic hills that border the lake. We particularly liked to walk on the peninsula of Tihany or in the village of Tapolca.
We hope that our favorites have made you want to discover Hungary. We enjoyed visiting this country. To be able to find oneself in places with the impression of being projected a few hundred years back, such as Sopron or Hollókö. We loved crossing the Hungarian countryside, walking in the steppes, the vineyards or even around Lake Balaton. And of course to be able to party until the end of the night and be transported by the atmosphere of the beautiful city of Budapest.

- By car : For this road trip, we opted for the car as a means of transport. The distances were not very important between our different stages. This allowed us to move regularly without being too tired. Here is the budget for this rental: – Rental agency : Hertz Budapest – Budget: Gasoline : 122,26€ Rental: 21€/day (so 301€ for 14 days)
- By train : Another greener way to visit Hungary is by train. Indeed there are quite a few trains that discharge most cities. You can go directly to the station to buy your ticket or online on Rail Ninja
During this trip we had the pleasure of discovering Hungarian gastronomy. As you must know by now, food is a very important part of our travels and discoveries! What we can say about Hungarian gastronomy is that we don't starve and that it keeps us going! The dishes are very hearty and generally very rich (cream, cheese, meat, etc.). Something to warm you up from low temperatures! Also you can find Paprika in many dishes; a famous spice in Hungary. Here are some classics that we have discovered:

If you are European, your phone plan normally works as in your country of origin. One thing to not worry about.
If you are not European, there is generally wifi in public places, restaurants and your accommodation of course. If you need to be more connected, there must surely be prepaid SIM card solutions.
